There are many reasons why we are in love with Six Senses Laamu, Maldives; here are our top ten:
- Ice & Chocolate Studio
We especially love the ice cream & chocolate studio at Six Senses Laamu. There is a diverse range of ice cream, chocolate and sorbet flavours that really reflect the personality of the island, for example the Padan flavour ice cream, which is flavoured using Padan leaves, harvested on the island.
Our favourite picks range from the more tropical, coconut & lychee to the weird and wonderful goats cheese & orange marmalade, orange & Campari and black pepper & strawberry. If none of the 42 flavours take your fancy, then the staff are more than happy for you to develop your own flavour! There is also a huge range of toppings to adorn your ice cream or sorbet in, it is a great spot to enjoy with the family, and the even better news is that it is complimentary throughout your stay so you can enjoy this special treat as much as your heart desires.
- Surfing in the Laamu Atoll
Laamu offers a wide range of activities on land and off. One of the off land activities which is very popular at Six Senses Laamu is, surfing. It is the only resort in the Laamu atoll; so usually the surfers will have the break all to themselves. The best spot is called the ‘Yin Yang’; it is an infamous break on the outer reef, the resort can organise trips there in the morning or afternoon.
Alternatively if you are a beginner and want to dip your toe in so to speak, there are smaller waves further north of the atoll. It is an amazing experience and something we would definitely recommend trying.
- Scuba Diving & Snorkelling
The area surrounding Laamu is a diver’s paradise, the protected coral reef is a combination of stunning coloured coral, and marine life. The crystal clear water creates an ideal setting for diving as the visibility is increased. There are a variety of rare species which you can see at Laamu, many which you won’t see anywhere else. At the resort they offer early morning and night dives, or a full day scuba excursion, which includes lunch.
Viewing this beautiful array or marine life is not only restricted to divers, the house reef, around the resort has the perfect conditions for snorkelling; filled with turtles, dolphins, manta rays among many other types of aquatic wildlife.
The resort offers a private snorkelling trip out to the outer reefs, this is something we would definitely recommend you do. It is a once in a lifetime experience, to swim among turtles in the clear blue sea, and experience the untouched and protected marine life.
- Leaf & Herb Garden
Outside ‘Leaf’ restaurant, there is an extensive herb and vegetable garden, it is a lovely idea as you can see where a lot of what you eat on island comes from; they have huge spinach plants and pretty much every herb under the sun! The plants are all labelled with beautiful, intricate wood panels so that you can explore.
The restaurant, Leaf, you enter over a wooden bridge in the treetops, with a view out to the ocean in front of you. Often the resort has visiting celebrity chefs; recently they hosted Chef Rasmus Kofoed. A Danish celebrity chef, who is the head chef and co-owner of ‘Geranium’, a 3 Michelin star restaurant in Copenhagen. The food on island is truly delicious with a range of restaurants to choose from, each restaurant holding an individual personality.
- Visiting Practitioner & Dr
There is an extensive spa complex on island, they have a string of visiting practitioners; recently they hosted Khun Noom from the Six Senses resort in Thailand. Her specialties were reiki healing and meditation. Khun Noom took meditation classes in the resort for guests to experience. These classes were hosted in the beautiful Yoga studio, which is located among the tree tops, with an open face onto the ocean. The current visiting practitioner is Nimisha Rattan, a holistic healer, her primary concern is ‘self-healing through self-awareness.’
A recent addition in the resort, is the wellness screening and the wellness program. The wellness screening is a 60 minute personal consultation; which uses advanced technology to analyse key physiological biomarkers. It is an extremely insightful and interesting experience.
When you arrive on island, you are given a personalised bike with your initials engraved in wood on the back. The hotel is very environmentally conscious and strives to be sustainable, thus they promote the use of the bikes. It is also a very relaxing way to get around the island; winding through the sandy mangroves is an idyllic way to transport yourself around this stunning island.
- Sandbank Dinner Experience & Island Day Experience
An experience which we definitely think is a must do while at the resort, is the private sandbank dinner. You are taken across by private boat to a spit of land in the middle of the ocean; a secluded and romantic environment. The resort prepare a delicious lobster barbeque on the private island which you enjoy by candlelight. It is a wonderful experience for honeymooners, or with your family. There is also the opportunity to be taken by boat to an unpopulated private island for the day. You are left with a decadent hamper lunch, phone and crystal clear sea as far as the eye can see. A perfect romantic day away.
- Sunset Dolphin Cruise
The shores surrounding Six Senses Laamu are home to many dolphins, you will often spot them playing in the water at breakfast time. But also there is an amazing opportunity to take a dolphin cruise. This occurs at sunset where you can enjoy the breeze on the boat, and sip champagne while the dolphins leap from the water around the boat, and play alongside. It is a wonderful experience for families.
- Sun & Star Gazing
At the resort they have a resident star and sun gazer. In the morning he can be spotted on the jetty on your way back from breakfast with a telescope; which allows you to look directly at the sun; it is a wonderful and unique thing to see. Then, in the evenings he can be found on the beach where he will explain to you all about the stars and astrology, there is no light pollution around the island, so the skies at night boast incredible clear views of the sky.
Every villa has a GEM; which stands for ‘Guest Experience Maker’, they truly make your stay even more special. They are there to organise experiences for you, and to assist you with any questions or queries you have whilst staying at the resort.
All the staff at Six Senses Laamu are so happy, which makes it such a wonderful environment to be in. They truly will go above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be. The beating heart of the resort is Marteyne, the General Manager, and her wonderful team.
