Indochina

Vietnam is simply stunning. Spectacular limestone peaks make cruising Halong Bay a pure delight, while the impressive Old Imperial City in Hué and the World Heritage listed town of Hoi An each provide a glimpse into the history of this fascinating country. Ancient and modern Asia meet in Hanoi, where the old quarter is filled with narrow streets selling traditional wares, and the buzz of motorbikes and the tinkle of cyclos has become the sound of the new city. Vietnam also boasts spectacular beaches, and our hand-picked beach resorts are perfectly located to provide some rest and relaxation during or after your tour.

Cambodia’s scenery is a feast for the eyes and here much of daily life has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Angkor Wat is the jewel in the crown and is a truly spectacular temple complex spanning an area of 10 sq kilometres. Visit Phnom Penh the capital, with its vibrant
hub of street markets, French colonial architecture and wonderful riverfront cafés and restaurants, and explore the amazing Royal Palace which rises majestically from the banks of the river.

Laos offers breathtaking landscapes, an unchanged culture and enchanting remnants of its ancient kingdom and temples. Luang Prabang is the charming home to a wonderful collection of Buddhist temples and monasteries. Once the royal capital of the Kingdom of Laos, it also affords a
stunning location at the confluence of the Nam Khan and the Mekong rivers, surrounded by mountains.

Out and About
Discover the fascinating history and incredible sights of this phenomenal region with a few
of our suggestions.

• Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s most modern city, but it stills retains glimpses of its colonial past
and turbulent history. The stunning façade and interior of the Central Post Office make it well worth a visit, while Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum provide a poignant insight into Vietnam’s more recent past.

• Take in some of Angkor Wat’s lesser known sites and discover the magic of Ta Prohm, a photographers dream in which tree roots have dramatically entombed this spellbinding temple
and Wat Damnak a beautiful French colonial pagoda in the heart of Siem Reap.

• Kuang Si Waterfall is one of Luang Prabang’s most picturesque sights and we recommend taking
a picnic lunch and finding a relaxing spot from which to take in its tranquil natural surroundings.

Food and Drink
Vietnamese cuisine reflects the country’s geography and climate, with north, central and southern
regions varying in terms of the spices and ingredients used, and dishes in the south being generally more spicy. There is an emphasis on fresh herbs and vegetables, fish sauce, soy sauce and peanuts, which are widely used for flavouring and dipping sauces. Cambodian dishes are often compared to Thai food and include curries, stir-fried vegetables, rice and noodles, but without the spice. Lao cuisine generally features sticky rice, and the popular dishes tam som, a spicy green papaya salad, and laap, a combination of chilli, lime juice, garlic, onion and minced meat, poultry or fish, are well worth a try.

We think the best way to try authentic Vietnamese food is to eat where the locals go, so head to
Pho 2000, close to Ben Thanh Market, Ho Chi Minh City, for street food at its very best. If you prefer something more refined, Club de L’Oriental, Hanoi with its open kitchen, and Mandarin Restaurant, Ho Chi Minh City both offer a great choice of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. For authentic Khmer cuisine we like Viroth’s Restaurant in Siem Reap and for a buffet selection of modern Cambodian and international dishes, L’Escale at Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa Hotel is a great option. In Luang Prabang we love the Art House Café for its great value local and western dishes in a riverside setting, and the elegant Phou Savanh Restaurant at La Résidence Phou Vau hotel for its delicious European delights.
