In the afternoon, head to Chinatown’s colourful market via the impressive Thien Hau temple.

Day 3 This morning drive to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an elaborate underground network stretching over 200 kilometres. Walk through the area and perhaps venture inside a specially adapted tunnel. In the afternoon, visit the fascinating War Remnants Museum.

What you need to know

• Saigon is Vietnam's most modern city and provides a gentle introduction to Indochina with its numerous coffee shops and modern shopping malls. Yet once you scratch the surface you will discover intriguing reminders of its past in the classic French colonial architecture, Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum

• Teeming with activity, Cai Rang floating market is a definite highlight and well worth the early morning start. Get right into the action and watch as locals trade fruit and vegetables; fantastic for photo opportunities
