View Larger Map Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah state and a major gateway to the Malaysian part of Borneo. Famed for its abundant wildlife, Borneo boasts tropical rainforests overflowing with rare flora and fauna, and of course the island's most celebrated resident, the orangutan. Kota Kinabalu itself takes its name from neighbouring Mount Kinabalu which, although the highest peak in Southeast Asia, can be climbed relatively easily without the need for specialist mountaineering equipment. The city also provides easy access to the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, just off the coast.
