Mauritius

Arabic sailors first discovered Mauritius as early as the 10th Century and cleverly kept this gem of an island a secret for over five hundred years.

Then the great seafaring nations of the Portuguese, closely followed by the Dutch, French and British chanced upon this truly beautiful tropical island which enjoys a near perfect climate year round. After that it was a scramble as kings, merchants and pirates squabbled over its prized ownership. Thankfully we can take you there without any such drama. Let us introduce you to some of the most luxurious beachside properties in the world, where the legendary warmth and hospitality of the Mauritian people will ensure that you’re pampered every moment of your stay.

Out and About
Casela Nature & Leisure Park
Nature lovers and thrill seekers will love this wonderful park in the west of the island, home to a huge variety of wildlife including lions, tigers, zebras, monkeys and giant tortoises. Explore the park by quad bike, buggy or Segway, enjoy a bird’s eye view from the zip line, or get up close and personal with the majestic big cats.

Wild Colours Tour
This unique tour brings the vivid natural colour palette of the Mauritian landscape to life, so whatever you do, don’t forget your camera! Enjoy breathtaking vistas of the green slopes around the extinct Trou-aux-Cerfs volcano; visit the sacred Hindu lake of Grand-Bassin, with its towering statue of Shiva; admire the magnificent flora and fauna of the Black River Gorges National Park, where spectacular waterfalls cascade down the cliffs; and gasp at the seven coloured earths of Chamarel, a mesmerising geological phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed.

A Cruise along the Coast
A leisurely catamaran cruise is the perfect way to see the island’s beautiful east coast. Enjoy a refreshing cocktail or three and a delicious lunch prepared by the chefs on board, before disembarking at the idyllic Île aux Cerfs, a stunning island with white sand beaches and a crystal clear lagoon, perfect for snorkelling. This is a popular destination, so if the tide’s out it’s worth wading across the sand bar to the smaller Île de l’Est, where you can find a quieter spot to sunbathe.

A Day at the Races
Watching the horse racing in Port Louis is a great day out. Champ de Mars, built in 1812, is the oldest race course in the Southern Hemisphere and sits in a bowl surrounded by mountains. It’s a fantastic place to people watch and try to win your fortune. Races take place on Saturdays or Sundays during the months of April - November and attract a regular crowd of up to 30,000 people.

Food and Drink
Mauritian cuisine shows creativity and “savoir-faire” in recipes which boldly fuse local ingredients and cooking traditions with modern techniques, and contemporary Mauritian cuisine has gained a fine reputation in recent years. With its influences ranging from Indian, Creole, Chinese and European, and with seafood playing an important role, it has attracted chefs from around the world and can offer dishes to suit all tastes. For the best Indian, Rasoi by Vineet at One&Only Le Saint Géran serves contemporary dishes from Michelin-starred chef Vineet Bhatia and we recommend you book ahead and try it for yourself. For superb Italian style seafood there’s Acquapazza at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita and for fabulous Asian cuisine try the teppanyaki at Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa.
