Seychelles

With a perfect year round climate, magnificent beaches, picture-perfect lagoons and luxury resorts, the Seychelles has long been a favourite amongst honeymooners and romantics. We think there are few better holiday destinations on earth if you’re looking for real peace and tranquility.

Naturally, island-hopping is one of the joys of visiting the Seychelles and there’s nothing quite like a gourmet picnic on a deserted beach prepared for you by your luxury resort. Watersports are widely available including windsurfing, water skiing, diving amongst the many beautiful reefs, or the excitement of sailing at speed on a catamaran. Don’t pass up the chance to visit Morne Seychellois National Park, as it’s an absolute haven for exotic flora and fauna. On La Digue, many of the locals use bicycles to get around and we think it’s a great way to do some exploring along the forest paths, where you will start to feel at one with the magical natural surroundings. A visit to Victoria is also recommended for the local markets full of jewellery and carved wooden artefacts, and haggling is great fun. And with so many beautiful islands to explore, you already have the perfect excuse to come back. You’ll find the resorts themselves are extremely luxurious with an atmosphere of genuine warmth and friendliness, and superb spas where the emphasis is on bodily and spiritual wellbeing, with a wealth of treatments available.

Out and About
We really encourage you to get out and about and explore to make the most of your Seychelles holiday. Here are a few suggested activities.

• Island hopping is a great way to experience the diversity of the islands, with each one offering a different geography, character and history. We recommend Cousin Island a beautiful nature reserve and home to some of the Seychelles’ rarest birds, and Praslin for Vallée De Mai Nature Reserve, known as the original Garden of Eden.

• The Seychelles is famous for its crystal clear waters and there are excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities. Shark Bank off Mahé is one of the premier dive sites, where white tip reef sharks and eagle rays are common, together with a plethora of tropical fish.

• La Digue is a picture perfect island just waiting to be explored and a hiking tour of the island’s untamed swamps, lush forest and wild orchids is a definite highlight.

• Why not charter a fishing boat with experienced crew and head to Turcos Bank, which is teeming with fish including tuna, jack, dorado, barracuda, streaker, kingfish, sailfish and marlin. Or try your hand at the local method of fishing – ‘palangrotte’ or bottom-fishing.

Food and Drink
Creole cuisine is quite simply wonderful and features an exciting blend of French, Indian and Oriental flavours and nuances. Curries prepared with coconut milk and the freshest local fruits, such as papaya and golden apple, are delicious, as is the popular grilled fish or octopus basted with a sauce of crushed chillies, ginger and garlic.

There is a wide choice of restaurants across the islands, some specialising in Creole dishes and others in a range of international cuisines including Chinese, Indian and Italian food. On Mahé, we love Chez Plume for its Creole inspired menu with a subtle French influence, and La Scala and Le Corsaire for their divine international and Italian dishes. Le Mont Fleuri on Saint Anne Island, a 15 minute boat ride from Mahé, has a stunning setting with fantastic views over the tree tops and beyond. Or for a more local beachfront shack try Café Arts on Praslin or Loutier Coco on La Digue.

When to go

Festival Kreol

Festival Kreol is the main cultural event in the Seychelles’ year and is a colourful celebration of the Creole culture through music, dance, arts, crafts and the food of the islands. Centered on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue in October, there is a real party atmosphere with street performances, fashion shows and entertainment throughout the night.
