View Larger Map They say everyone’s roots can be traced back to this mesmerizing continent and there’s certainly something about South Africa that will stir your innermost soul. It’s a land of extraordinary contrasts, from wide open sun-baked savannahs where the big game roam, to rugged coastlines, hillside vineyards and the most beautiful flower-filled countryside. With Table Mountain as its dramatic backdrop, Cape Town’s pleasant climate, natural setting and fabulous beaches make it a great holiday destination. Cape Town is also the gateway to the Garden Route which snakes through some of the most spectacular South African coastline, taking in impressive mountain ranges and historical towns, the picturesque vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the enchanting river gorges of Tsitsikamma National Park, before arriving in Port Elizabeth. South Africa also boasts big 5 game viewing, and early morning and evening game drives with qualified rangers are among the most exciting experiences you will ever have. Shamwari Game Reserve and Lion Sands are great options for seeing game as part of a South Africa itinerary, or if you would prefer to venture into Kenya and spend a few days in the Masai Mara, please ask us for our recommendations. South Africa and the Indian Ocean also make a great holiday combination, with the desert island relaxation and total indulgence of a spa resort in Mauritius or the Seychelles, perfectly complementing the excitement of an African safari. Do talk to us about ideas so we can help you make the most of your travels. Out and About From the beaches of Cape Town to the heart of the Cape Winelands, South Africa has so much to offer. Here are a few suggestions. • Take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain for spectacular views of Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Flats and the Cape Peninsula. • Sea kayaking may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to Cape Town, but we highly recommend you give it a try, as paddling to Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony is a definite highlight of any Cape Town holiday. • Tour the food and wine heartland of Franschhoek Valley, where leading chefs create sumptuous cuisine and there are a multitude of wine estates to explore, or experience the beauty of this area from above with a scenic helicopter tour. • For a thrilling and unique experience, try a shark cage dive off the coast of Hermanus, and if you don’t fancy getting wet you’ll still get a great view of the great white sharks from the deck of the boat. Food and Drink South African cuisine blends the culinary arts of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Arab states. It is rich in seafood and the local speciality is rock lobster, either simply prepared with lemon butter, or as part of a modern fusion dish. Curries are served with chopped vegetables, and locally made pickles or chutneys are also popular. Baia at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town has to be our favourite seafood restaurant, with its innovative dishes, a chic setting and spectacular views. If you’re heading up the Garden Route, we also love the award-winning gastronomic delights of Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel and Mauro’s, Port Elizabeth, for its divine South African and Italian dishes in a beachfront setting.
