From magnificent scenery to quaint and charming towns, this self-drive tour encompasses the many delights that South Africa has to offer. We have selected some of the very best boutique hotels to complement the tour, however the hotels and itinerary can be tailored to your taste. Choose to start in Port Elizabeth or Cape Town and if you would prefer to enjoy the itinerary as a private tour we can arrange this for you too. Please call our Private Travel Advisers on 020 7751 0880 to discuss options. Day 1 Leaving Port Elizabeth you’ll drive along the coast to Tsitsikamma National Park. Described as the ‘garden of the Garden Route’, Tsitsikamma actually deserves a much more vivid description to encapsulate the beauty of its lush indigenous forest, spectacular waterfalls and deep river gorges. One of the most unmissable views is from the suspension bridge over Storms River mouth gorge - simply spellbinding. Continue to Plettenberg Bay with its breathtaking vistas of the sea and mountains for a 3 night stay. Overnight at The Plettenberg Day 2 After breakfast, take a short drive to Knysna Elephant Park, where well informed guides tell the sad and mystical story of the Knysna elephants. The visit presents the opportunity to touch, feed and photograph these gentle giants. After lunch continue to Birds of Eden, the largest single free-flight aviary in the world, set under a unique 2 hectare dome. Day 3 In the morning set sail with a whale and dolphin boat experience, before returning to Plettenberg to relax for the remainder of the day. Day 4 This morning, drive to the lagoon side town of Knysna. Enjoy time at Knysna Waterfront, before embarking on a fun and adventurous cruise around Knysna Heads on-board the Three Legs Rivercat, one of the most advanced river cruisers ever built. Continue to the picturesque town of Wilderness, set between the Kaaimans River and the Goukama Nature Reserve and surrounded by natural lakes and lagoons, for a 2 night stay. Overnight at Views Boutique Hotel & Spa Day 5 Enjoy some time in Oudtshoorn, known as ‘the feather capital of the world’ due to its large ostrich industry. Take a guided tour of a working ostrich farm, then make the short drive to Cango Caves. Explore incredible limestone caverns of stalagmites and stalactites, including the awe-inspiring 90 metre long Van Zyl’s Hall. Head back to Wilderness in the late afternoon. Day 6 Drive towards Robertson, located on the famous Route 62, the longest wine route in the world. En-route stop in the historical and scenic town of Swellendam and take in one of the local art galleries. Overnight at The Robertson Small Hotel Day 7 Before leaving Robertson, visit Graham Beck’s cellar and farm, situated in the Breede River Valley bordering the semi-arid Little Karoo region. Take part in a spot of wine tasting then drive on to Franschhoek for a 2 night stay. Arriving during the afternoon, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight at Le Quartier Français Day 8 Enjoy a delightful day exploring the vineyards of the Cape Winelands, driving through breathtaking mountain ranges and Cape Dutch homesteads. Day 9 Today take a leisurely drive to Cape Town, via Cape Point and the Peninsula, passing magnificent beaches and historic and picturesque coastal villages, before arriving at Cape Point’s breathtaking headland. There is also the opportunity to visit Boulders Beach Penguin Colony. Arrive into Cape Town for your onward flight, or talk to us about extending for a few nights in Cape Town.
