Bangkok

Bangkok, known affectionately by Thais as Krung Thep, the 'City of Angels', is quite simply one of the most vibrant and electric cities on earth, bustling with life and offering a dazzling array of colourful bars, lively restaurants, boutique shops and street markets. From humble origins as a trading post on the Chao Phraya river, Bangkok grew in importance, and became the nation's capital in 1768 following the destruction of the original capital, Ayutthaya, by the Burmese. Today the metropolis is home to some 10 million people, along with a fascinating array of sights including the Grand Palace, the temple of Wat Pho, containing a magnificent 46 metre reclining Buddha, and the impressive Wat Arun, named after the Indian god of dawn, Aruna.
