Marrakech - The Inside Track

Marrakech - The Inside Track
Only 3 ½ hours away and perfect for a city break, long weekend or week long break for some r & r, I returned from Marrakech completely entranced and wondering why I had never thought about going before.

But the short flight time and new scheduled services from British Airways and BMI are not the only reasons to go, the city has a wealth of history, some beautiful architecture and an enchanting souk, all of which can easily keep you busy for several days. And to complement this there’s an impressive choice of top end accommodation from elegant riads to appealing 5* resort hotels.

The oldest part of Marrakech is the Medina, and within its walls are located our two hand-picked riads, both an easy stroll from the main sights. Villa des Orangers is the larger of the two, but with only 27 rooms and suites it instantly conveys a fantastic boutique feel and I just loved its beautiful arches, 3 serene pools and contemporary décor. The rooms and suites are all individually designed and I found that each time I thought I had found my favourite I would be shown another that was equally as stylish and sumptuous, making it impossible to choose. My tip would be to upgrade to one of the Terrace Rooms or Suites which each offer a beautiful sun lounging terrace with private access, and make sure you eat dinner in the riad at least once as the food is divine.

Riad Farnatchi is equally stunning and a real labour of love for the English father and son owners. James is based in Marrakech so is on hand to make sure your stay is as comfortable as possible, and is happy to point you in the right direction for the city’s best loved sights including the souk and Jemaa-el-Fna Square. I was utterly impressed with all of the 9 suites here, which each have their own character and elegance, and additional touches such as the Molton Brown amenities and complimentary use of the Hammam each evening make this riad not only perfectly located, but the ideal place to relax after a day of sightseeing.

I was surprised to find that Marrakech is also an excellent option for a relaxing week away, with the well established Es Saadi Palace and newly opened Four Seasons Resort, Marrakech each offering a resort style option with the sights of the city within easy reach. I was absolutely blown away by Es Saadi Palace’s spa, which is not only huge but offers a truly impressive array of alluring massages and treatments. The spa staff are also superb and very highly trained, and I could easily have spent a lot of time here given half a chance. The food at Es Saadi Palace is also exquisite, especially the fabulous deserts, and there is a lovely pool side terrace from which to enjoy them.

Four Seasons brings a contemporary resort option to Marrakech and with its trademark excellent facilities for kids, including a superb Kids For All Seasons Club and a family pool, it’s a fantastic option for a family holiday. But it’s not just kids who are looked after, there is a beautiful adults only pool and an immense spa, making it perfect for couples too.

For the ultimate getaway, I’d recommend heading into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains for a stay at Richard Branson’s enchanting Kasbah Tamadot. The beautiful main house is filled with characterful rooms, there is a gorgeous pool and terrace with panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains, and the staff are just fabulous. For a break to remember try one of the Tented Suites. Each is sumptuously decorated and has a fabulous terrace to take in the views, and staying in one of these you will have all the privacy you need for a romantic retreat; I know that’s where I would like to be heading on a grey autumn day in England!
