I've recently come back from a short trip to Oman and have to say I loved the destination which completely exceeded my expectations. Not only can Oman cater for all tastes with its luxury accommodation, but the country has a depth of culture and authenticity that makes it stand out from other destinations such as Dubai. Spending time in one of the luxury properties in or around Muscat means you can enjoy the beaches, pools, wonderful spas and superb restaurants, the properties in Muscat really do offer something for everyone. The Chedi is for those couples who love clean lines and minimalist luxury. And with the newly opened spa, currently the biggest in Oman, it's ideal for those that want to be pampered. The Al Bustan Palace, now a Ritz -Carlton hotel has an elegance and grandeur that is defined as soon as you enter the imposing lobby and see the immense chandelier that dominates it. Then there is the Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah consisting of three resorts in one. Al Waha is a haven for families with superb family rooms, pool and the Splash Pad water play area as well as the lazy river. Al Bandar is at the centre of the property with large rooms and a wonderful Piano Lounge for a great atmosphere and expansive views. And then there is Al Husn which is ideal for couples looking for privacy and tranquility provided by this exclusive cliff top retreat. At the centre of Muscat is the impressive Grand Mosque and a tour of this stunning building is a must. At every turn another beautiful view was presented and our guide was superb at explaining more about the national faith and the history behind the building. There is also the recently opened Opera House which is hosting some of the best opera groups in the world over the next few months and the city boasts a fantastic souk for those who want to pick up a souvenir. Travelling into the interior on a private tour I was surprised by how dramatic the landscape was and how striking the green date plantations are with the mountainous backdrop. I was lucky enough to stay in accommodation which has been designed to highlight the natural beauty of Oman. The View tented camp is perched in the mountains, and watching the glowing sunrise over the peaks was only rivaled by watching the sunset over the undulating sand dunes at Desert Nights Camp. Visiting Nizwa Fort was fascinating and the souks that surround it are charming. I was even lucky enough to see one of the local farms harvesting dates in one of the small towns we passed through.
