One of the oldest cities in Oman, Nizwa was also the capital city in centuries gone by. A trip to Nizwa on a Friday is a fantastic experience as this is when the weekly livestock market takes place.
Make sure you rise early in the morning to be collected from your hotel after breakfast and driven the short one-hour journey up to Nizwa. This will mean you are there in good time to witness the hive of activity in the livestock market which takes place outside the main souk. Locals come to the market to trade predominantly goats, but also cattle which are sold at auction and you will see goats and cows tied up on every available pillar and post and frenetic sales going on all around.
Once you’ve had your fill of the market’s activities, make sure you leave enough time to visit the famous ancient fort in Nizwa and take a walk around the high walls which offer some excellent views and a wonderful insight into the history of the city. You will then be driven back to Muscat in time for a hearty lunch and a relaxing afternoon after your busy morning.
