Whether you are basing yourself at a countryside property such as Hacienda San Rafael or in one of the cities in this region, a day spent exploring the countryside, the ancient town of Ronda and white villages of Andalucia is a must.
Taking your own hire car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and create your own itinerary. We would recommend getting on the road early in order to make the most of the day and, if you are travelling in the summer months, take advantage of the slightly cooler weather in the mornings as temperatures rise dramatically inland here in high summer by midday.
The hilltop town of Ronda has a wonderfully dramatic setting with panoramic views across the surrounding plains. Whilst here we would recommend that you explore the ancient bullring (the oldest in Spain) and the dramatic Puente Nuevo, which divides Ronda in two and covers the vast chasm made by the Guadalevin river which flows through the bottom of the gorge. There are also many beautiful, historical churches and palaces as well as numerous artists whose stalls are set up across the district of Ronda. After you’ve had your fill of exploring, stop for a drink and a tapa to refuel before you get on your way again.
Travelling through the Andalucian countryside, you can’t ignore the idyllic white villages that cling to the hillsides so do take the time to drive through the narrow streets, stopping to take a stroll through the beautiful piazzas and soak up some of Andalucian village life before returning to your hotel to reflect on your fascinating day in this beautiful region of southern Spain.
