Cairo has a romance and atmosphere all of its own and skilfully blends modern life with its historic past, making it a joy to explore. Take to the colourful souks and grab a bargin in the myriad of streets, or visit the legendary pyramids and the Sphinx, just a stones throw from the city in Giza.
Naturally the Nile is the focus of much of Egyptian life old and new and our cruise takes you to many of Egypt’s best known and most impressive ancient sites. Luxor is the gateway to the Valley of the Kings and Karnak temple and is often described as the ‘world’s greatest open air museum’.
Or enjoy all the pleasures of a sun, sea and sand holiday, as well as an incredible range of activities, attractions, restaurants and entertainment in Sharm El-Sheikh. The diving and watersports here are exceptional, while stunning golf courses and many other land-based activities are available nearby.
Out & About
Egypt is where every day can be like a new holiday, with astounding archeological sites, family friendly beaches and exceptional dive sites to discover. Here are a few of our favourite adventures.
- Abu Simbel is arguably one of the most striking sights in Egypt. It is well worth making the trip to visit its impressive twin temples, a lifetime reminder of the rein of Pharaoh Ramesses II, perhaps the most celebrated Pharaoh in history, and his queen Nefertari.
- Visit the legendary Karnak temple when the sun has set for a cooler and more atmospheric look at this impressive monument and a unique sound and light show that tells the story of the temple and the history of Thebes.
- Tread in the footsteps of the great adventurers and make your own discoveries in the Valley of Kings, or visit the lesser know Valley of Queens, where the wives of Pharaoh’s were buried and there are many surprisingly beautiful and intricately decorated tombs, including that of Queen Nefertari.
- Take a thrilling 4x4 desert safari, or go horse and camel riding through dramatic desert and mountain scenery.
- Discover why the Red Sea has such an enviable international reputation as a scuba diving paradise by exploring the stunning coral reefs in its clear, warm waters.
Food & Drink
There’s an incredible choice of bars and restaurants in Cairo, Luxor and the main tourist centres, with French and Italian bistros competing with Egyptian, Asian, Polynesian, Japanese, Thai and many other delicious cuisines. Although some dishes are similar to Middle Eastern cuisine, Egypt is famous for its typical local specialities including Kushari, a mix of rice, lentils and macaroni which is virtually a national dish. Egyptian cuisine is also a treat for vegetarians as it tends to rely heavily on vegetable dishes, although you’ll also be treated to wonderful fish and seafood. As well as being eaten fresh, you’ll find dates and figs feature in a lot of local cuisine, adding a deliciously sweet taste and texture to many dishes. Arabic tea and the uniformly sweet black Egyptian coffee are also served everywhere.
Try Egyptian cuisine for yourself at Abu El Sid in Na’ama Bay, offering traditional fare in a charming atmosphere. For seafood, the family run Safsafa in the heart of the old market is a favourite of ours and for beautiful sea views and a touch of luxury, the Italian dishes at Il Frantoio at the Four Seasons in Sharks Bay are excellent. For a romantic evening in Cairo, we suggest the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of Le Deck, the Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah’s floating restaurant, anchored to the banks of the Nile and serving international cuisine and Oriental favourites. Or for a touch of glamour, the Grand Hyatt Cairo’s Revolving Restaurant provides delicious French cuisine with 360 degree views from its 41st floor location.
