South Africa’s Eastern Cape is a popular holiday destination for South African’s themselves and it is easy to see why. The town of Plettenberg Bay overlooks an impressive sweep of surfing beach and makes the most of its location to offer the best in coastal relaxation. The town itself is home to a host of great restaurants and shopping opportunities while nearby you can enjoy an array of outdoor pursuits including mountain biking, horse riding, walking and whale and dolphin trips around the bay itself. Also nearby are the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, The Birds of Eden and The Elephant Sanctuary providing great family days out. Further inland but within easy driving distance of Port Elizabeth airport are the Eastern Cape’s private game reserves. Here it’s possible to experience a big five safari in a non-malarial area and without having to fly anywhere. Again, a superb option for families with younger children or indeed for a multi-generational family safari. Reach the Eastern Cape either by direct flight from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth or George or drive along the Garden Route (with stops along the way) from Cape Town.
