The City of the Medicis is steeped in history and was once the wealthiest city on earth. Often referred to as The Cradle of the Renaissance, that's quite some title to live up to. It really was thanks to the influence of the Medici, though, that Florence attracted so many of Italy’s finest artists, politicians, theologians and writers, whose inspiration and works have made the city into one of Europe’s most treasured. Although small, Florence still manages to house an incredible concentration of galleries, museums, markets, boutiques, restaurants and sights that even after various visits you will still not have seen it all! If it is your first visit then The Uffizi Gallery, The Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo’s David and Piazza del Duomo should certainly be on your hit list. Take a stroll along the Ponte Vecchio where the views change dramatically in the differing lights, or marvel at the duomo at night when it’s all lit up and you may even have this ethereal sight all to yourself. Let’s not forget the city’s fashion and design heritage; being the birthplace of Gucci and Roberto Cavalli you won’t be disappointed with the array of designer boutiques on Via de’Tornabuoni. In keeping with Italians' impeccable levels of style, there is an abundance of stylish and contemporary hotels in Florence where great attention is paid to unique design and quality. The city can be very busy, especially in the summer months, so, to escape the crowds, explore the Boboli Gardens, which are home to a collection of sculptures dating back to the 16th century. Alternatively, take the train down to nearby Siena for the day. Hire bicycles to explore the city or catch a bus out to Fiesole on the outskirts, with beautiful hilltop vistas looking back towards the town. Florence is the ideal destination for a short luxury break, being so accessible, but just hop on a train and before you know it you could be in Italy’s capital city or sunning yourself on the Amalfi Coast.
