KwaZulu Natal is one of South Africa’s lesser-visited and known regions, which is both a great shame and also a great opportunity for those who do choose to holiday here. The climate is milder than other parts of South Africa with average day time temperatures in the twenties, even in the winter months. Here you have miles of sunny coastline stretching from Durban up the east coast to Rocktail Bay and the Mozambique border. The beaches here are golden and sweeping and generally with surf so it’s not calm, Indian Ocean waters but a stunning coastal landscape with some very good diving in the area. Nearby is the malaria-free Phinda Private Game Reserve, for big five game viewing, as well as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park for animal and bird lovers. Further inland are South Africa’s historic battlefields holding memories of both the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer Wars. Whether or not you are a fan of military history the tours here are utterly enthralling and a must-do if you are visiting KwaZulu Natal. To the west, forming a natural border with the Eastern Cape, are the majestic Drakensburg Mountains, a great draw for walkers and a great place to relax for a couple of days. Finally, Durban itself makes a great start and end point to a tour of KwaZulu Natal with direct flights from Johannesburg, year-round sunshine and some excellent hotels in which to round off your holiday.
