Jabal Akhdar, meaning “The Green Mountain” in Arabic, is part of the Al Hajar mountain range, one of Oman’s most spectacular regions. Perched here 2,000 metres above sea level, Alila Jabal Akhdar overlooks a dramatic gorge, surrounded by awe-inspiring views of the Al Hajar Mountains. This Oman resort is the perfect base for exploring the region’s magnificent landscape of rugged, untouched beauty while staying in extreme comfort. Favoured among hotels in Nizwa, it is a haven for adventure travellers, nature lovers and those seeking a retreat from the desert heat.

Inspired by ancient forts, traditional Omani construction techniques using local stones are combined with contemporary architecture to create a uniquely relaxing environment, from the pool to the spacious suites that look out to mesmerising views of the cliff and mountains.

There are 84 suites and two villas. The design is contemporary but takes inspiration from the history and culture of Oman. The rooms include all the modern amenities such as satellite TV, an in-room safe and Wi-Fi. The bathrooms include a rain shower and separate bath – perfect for relaxing in after a day’s adventures. For added luxury, the Jabal Villas come with their own private pool.

The city of Nizwa is an hour’s drive away and there you can explore the souq and the historical fort, which was built in 1668. There is also a smaller souq in the village of Jabal Akhdar, which is nearer the hotel. Rosewater from the region is highly valued. The rose terraces bloom from March to May and wandering through the blossoms with the heavenly aroma surrounding you is a unique experience.

For the more adventurous, Alila Jabal Akhdar is ideally placed for trekking through the Hajar Mountains where you can enjoy the fresh air and spectacular views.

Back at the hotel, you can choose to hit the gym or simply relax in either the indoor or outdoor swimming pool. For true indulgence, visit the Spa Alila and experience one of the rejuvenating treatments inspired by local health and beauty traditions.

The Alila concierge team are on hand to help plan your trip around the areas that interest you, such as learning more about local history and culture, attempting regional cooking or adventuring into the rugged landscape.

With its mountain location, Alila Jabal Akhdar enjoys a refreshing climate year round. However, the best time to visit most parts of Oman is between November and mid-March, when daytime temperatures average 25°C. It is worth bearing this in mind when planning your trip as, for the rest of the year, much of Oman is oppressively hot and hazy, particularly between May and August.
