Pacuare Lodge is a sublime rainforest retreat, hidden away in a remote location and only accessible via a rough jungle track or a white water rafting expedition along the spectacular Pacuare River. A member of National Geographic’s ‘Unique Lodges of the World’, this is a secluded sanctuary where the focus is on sustainable living, back-to-nature relaxation and adrenaline-pumping adventure.
Deep in the rainforest to the east of San José, on the banks of the Pacuare River, the lodge is approximately 2 and a half hours’ drive from San José, followed by around 90 minutes of white
water rafting through spectacular canyons and dense jungle. Alternatively, it’s a 30 minute ride in a four wheel drive vehicle from the drop-off point, along a rough and bumpy track, before crossing the river in a hanging gondola. Helicopter transfers from San José are also available on request.
20 suites blend almost imperceptibly with their rainforest surroundings, with features including palm-thatched roofs, plush canopy beds, ceiling fans, generous open plan bathrooms
and outdoor rain showers. River Suites are set in the gardens and open onto a private terrace with hammock. The terraces of the larger River View Deluxe Suites overlook the Pacuare River whilst the highly recommended Linda Vista Suites also boast spacious indoor and outdoor living areas as well as a private plunge pool. The secluded Canopy Suite is a favourite for honeymooners, with its own plunge pool and a private suspension bridge leading to a tree-top viewing platform. The palatial Jaguar Villa has a large living room, two bathrooms, each with an indoor and outdoor shower, a soaking tub overlooking the river, a treetop platform for spotting wildlife and a large terrace with a private pool.
The excellent restaurant makes extensive use of the fruit and vegetables grown at the hotel’s own organic farm, and boasts an impressive wine cellar. There is also an open-air riverside lounge with a small bar. The Nest is a truly unique culinary experience, where you can enjoy a candlelit dinner for up to four people on a platform 20 metres up in the rainforest canopy. The lodge can also arrange a romantic dinner by the riverside with candles and a firepit.
Complimentary activities on offer at the lodge include zip lining, canyoning and hiking with one of the lodge’s naturalist guides. A 10 minute walk along one of the trails leads to a secluded
waterfall with a pool beneath that is perfect for a refreshing swim. There is also a small fitness centre and the inviting Jaw Juü Spa which offers soothing treatments overlooking the river. Complimentary WiFi is available in the hotel lobby and there are also outlets for charging electronic devices.
Please note the minimum age is 7 yrs; for rafting it is 12 yrs. Only hand-luggage size baggage can be brought in by raft; the lodge has a storage facility nearby for larger items.
