The stunning region of Halkidiki in northern Greece is known for its beautiful peninsulas covered in lush Mediterranean forest. There are certainly enough activities in Halkidiki to please anyone. Whether it’s taking boat trips, fishing, learning about the historical sites or taking part in water sports, there will definitely be something to suit everybody’s needs. Here are some of our highlights:
View Mount Athos’ monasteries
The slopes of Halkidiki‘s eastern peninsula are decorated with 20-odd monasteries, which form UNESCO-listed Mount Athos. Visitors need a licence to get in, and women and children aren’t allowed at all, so skip all the paperwork and view the centuries-old monasteries the relaxing way – by boat, sundowner in hand.
Take in the views at Meteora
Meteora means ‘suspended in the air’ and the monasteries here look like they’re living up to their name. They top naturally formed rock pillars, which rise high above the countryside. Inside, Byzantine paintings are the highlight, while outside it’s the views that keep cameras clicking.
Visit Greece’s second city
Thessaloniki is about 90 minutes’ drive from Halkidiki. It’s got stacks of shops, museums and restaurants, plus the old town is a tangle of winding lanes, traditional houses and Byzantine churches, while away the day exploring the backstreets while you take in the gorgeous surroundings.
