Picture Perfect Honeymoons
The Maldives brings so much choice for honeymoons, with perfect white sands, palm-fringed beaches and turquoise lagoons the paradise islands of the Maldives seem to be made for luxury honeymoons. There are so many to choose from and everyone has their own personal preferences, whether that’s for an overwater villa, a colourful house reef on which to snorkel or and underwater spa, but here are three of our favourites.
Six Senses Laamu
Six Senses Laamu has a choice of beachside or overwater villas so you could do a few nights in each on your honeymoon if you’re unsure which to go for. The overwater villas have large wooden decks for a real indoor-outdoor feel meaning you needn’t miss a moment of sunshine and have lots of glass panelling in the floors to really add to the ‘wow’ factor. The fabulous chill bar is surrounded by overwater nets so you can lounge with a cocktail while watching the sunset. A short swim from the overwater village takes you to the incredible house reef and there is a vast spa to indulge your every wellness whim. If it sounds as if you might have to do a bit of walking, fear not, bicycles are provided with every room so you can glide easily around the resort. There’s also a good surf break close to the resort is you fancy hanging five.
Per Aquum Huvafen Fushi
Huvafen Fushi is small and perfectly formed and idyllic for honeymooners. The island itself is ringed by golden sands and you can choose to have a room over water or on the beach itself. There is so much lush vegetation that you’ll feel utterly private in your villa with its own gorgeous courtyard with indoor-outdoor bathroom. With the spa and fine dining restaurants located on their own jetties there is a great feeling of space as well as lots of choice about where to eat, sunbathe or snorkel (the house reef off the main beach is a must). Spoil yourself with a treatment or massage in the underwater spa and chill by the very cool pool where subtle, laidback beats lend a classy Ibizan vibe to the stunning setting.
Finally, Gili Lankanfushi was the first Maldivian resort to offer purely overwater accommodation and does so in superb Robinson Crusoe style. That is, if Robinson Crusoe had won the lottery. Villas are entirely made of wood with spacious decks and often large roof terraces as well. Flop off your deck straight into a clear lagoon and (depending on which jetty you choose) swim over to an incredible reef, where you can have a snorkel with the resident marine biologist. Use your personal bicycles to visit the open-air cinema, go for lunch at By the Sea, serving Peruvian-Japanese fusion including exquisite sushi, or to head to the spa for an early-morning yoga session or massage. Alternatively, stay in your beautiful villa and allow your Mr Friday bring you whatever you need, the perfect private honeymoon sanctuary.
